Rhinoplasty: A Solution to Snoring?

Rhinoplasty A Solution to Snoring

Snoring is an annoyance for many people. It bothers not only the people who may sleep nearby, but it can also bother you because it affects your breathing pattern. Snoring can sometimes make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. If you have done any research, you have probably come across Rhinoplasty as a possible solution, but does it work to stop snoring?

What is Snoring?

Snoring is a physical phenomenon that occurs when during breathing, the flow of air does not pass easily between the nose and throat, thus inducing the vibration of a part of the throat that causes the noise.

But why do we Snore?

Under normal conditions, air enters the body through the nose. Turbulence occurs if obstacles arise in the airflow path between the nose and the lungs. These cause a vibration of the anatomical structures and, therefore, the emission of that characteristic noise. In most cases, the cause of the disorder is rhinogenic. People snore because there is an obstruction in the nose due to the deviated nasal septum, swelling of the turbinates, or a narrowing of the nasal valve. To determine the cause of snoring, a simple visit to the otorhinolaryngologist or plastic surgeon is sufficient.

How to Stop Snoring?

Snoring is not just about you making a sound while sleeping; it’s more than that. It may indicate specific health problems like obesity, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), sleep deprivation, a deformed nose, and losing your partner. Some common ways to stop snoring are losing weight if you are overweight, sleeping on your side, taking steam, and getting enough sleep each day. These habits can remarkably affect your breathing problems.
However, if the problem is severe and you want a permanent solution, you can go for Rhinoplasty. So, if you are snoring due to a structural problem in your nose, Rhinoplasty can help.

How does it work?

Your surgeon will most likely need to remove some cartilage to open up the airways and correct the shape of the septum. There are two types of procedural options depending on your case. Either you’ll have a closed procedure that is incisions are made inside the nose or an open procedure that is columella incised by the surgeon. The whole procedure will only take 2-3 hours.
The inside of your nose will swell during the recovery period. This swelling will narrow your airways, causing you to snore. So, you should know that snoring after Rhinoplasty is normal and expected for the next few weeks. You’ll be able to breathe more easily after that.
